Copying an activity or resource from one unit to another is a two-step process.

First, you create a backup file of that item, then second, you restore the backup file into a different unit. You can also restore the file into the same unit if you want to duplicate the activity in a unit.

When you back up an item, none of the student information is backed up, you don't get results or discussion comments etc. You get a clean version of the item.

Please note: Copying a Turnitin Assignment can be problematic. It is best practice to create a new Turnitin assignment, rather than backing it up and restoring it into a new unit. See the LEO Guide on how to create a Turnitin Assignment.

You must be an editing lecturer to back up an item from a unit.

You must be an editing lecturer to restore an item into a unit.

  1. Navigate to the unit and the activity or resource you would like to copy.
  2. From the 'Administration' menu, select [Activity/resource] administration > Backup.

  3. Click 'Next' through the pages or simply click 'Jump to final step'. The only option you have when backing up an activity/resource is the name of the backup file. Ensure you don't change the three letter file extension.
  4. Once the backup is successfully created, click 'Continue'.
  5. You will be taken to the 'Restore' screen.
    1. If you would like to restore the activity/resource straight away, skip to step 2 in the "restore the activity or resource" section.
    2. If you would like to save the backup file onto your computer, click the 'Download' link in the 'User private backup area'.
      The first item in this area is your most recent backup.
      The file will be downloaded on to your computer and you can then share that file with colleagues who will be able to restore that activity/resource in their own units.
  1. From any unit in LEO, in the 'Administration' menu select Unit administration > Restore.

  2. If the backup file is on your computer, use the 'Choose a file...' button, or use the drag and drop area to add the file from a folder on your computer.

    If you created the backup file yourself, it will appear in the list of backup files at the bottom of the page. Your most recent backup will appear at the top of the list. Click the 'Restore' link next to the correct backup file.

  3. Click 'Continue'.
  4. You now need to select the unit you would like to restore the activity or resource into. A list of all the units you are an editing lecturer in is here, including archived units. You may need to refine the list by searching.
    Select the correct unit and click 'Continue'.

  5. Click 'Next'. You can see on this page the name and type of activity we are restoring.
  6. Click 'Next' then 'Perform restore'. Once the item is restored, click 'Continue' and you will be taken to that unit.
  7. Find the activity/resource in the new unit. It will go into the same section number that it was backed up from. If you don't know what section the item came from, you will have to look at the last item in each section until you find it.
  8. Turn editing on and drag the item to the place you would like it to appear using the four-headed arrow icon as a handle.
