In November the Faculty of Education and Arts, in partnership with La Salle Academy, welcomed leading international and national educators to ACU’s Melbourne Campus for the Catholic Leadership International Symposium.
On Tuesday 14 November, the Faculty of Education and Arts, in partnership with La Salle Academy, welcomed leading international and national educators to ACU’s Melbourne Campus for the Catholic Leadership International Symposium.
Hosted by Professor Tania Aspland and convened by Professor Geraldine Castleton, symposium sessions were lead by Professor Br David Hall FMS, Professor Christopher Branson and Professor Peta Goldburg, and looked at the impact of global and local changes and their implications for learning and leadership in Catholic contexts. ‘Encounter’ was the theme that emerged from the symposium, with keynote addresses from Professor Gerald Cattaro, Executive Director of the Centre for Catholic School Leadership at Fordham University, New York and Dr Paul Sharkey, Director of Catholic Education Services, Catholic Education Melbourne.
Australian Catholic educators Dr Doug Ashleigh; Dr Michael Bezzina; Ms Sue Walsh and Dr Bill Sultmann were joined by international discussants Sr Mary Paul McCaughey O.P., De Paul University, Chicago; Professor Teresa O’Doherty, Mary Immaculate College, Limerick; Professor Michael Sampson, St John’s University, New York; Dr John Lydon, St Mary’s Twickenham, London; Dr Gareth Byrne, Dublin City University; and Dr Roisin Coll, University of Glasgow to share their perspectives and discuss the nature, practice and formation of contemporary Catholic school leadership in a globalised world.
The symposium, which was attended by many of ACU’s partner schools, provoked lively discussion leading to the identification of key challenges and opportunities in contemporary Catholic leadership and a collective commitment to ongoing collaborative work involving universities, systems and schools. This dialogue also helped to inform the plans for a global masters program in Catholic Educational Leadership, which ACU is currently developing.
