ACU's inaugural Stations of the Cross Easter exhibition at the McGlade Gallery in Strathfield will feature a special "16th Station" by Warmun artist Shirley Purdie.
Renowned artists from all over Australia have created works addressing each of the Franciscan 15 Stations. The 15th Station, according to tradition, recalls the resurrection – the defining moment of the Easter story.
Esteemed Indigenous artist Shirley Purdie, from the Warmun Community in the Kimberley, offered her creation of a 16th Station, where Jesus comes to Warmun. This is a significant connection to the Emmaus Road appearance of Jesus following His resurrection.
Exhibition curators Rev Dr Doug Purnell OAM and Lachlan Warner invited 16 ACU staff to contribute a written personal reflection on a particular Station, each containing an understanding of a particular station as part of the journey of Jesus and how that particular Station has had an impact on a journey of faith.

Doug Purnell said the artists were not necessarily chosen because they saw themselves as "religious", but because they had "the capacity to answer difficult questions through artistic practice". He said, "I give the artists freedom to create the work as is appropriate for them. As a theologian I am continually delighted in the way artists give us back our texts in really fresh and life giving ways."
Mr Warner said the addition of Shirley Purdie's work was a highlight for the exhibition in ACU's 25th anniversary year. "Shirley's deep engagement with both the Easter Stations and with country led to her request. Her joyous painting connects and concludes the Stations in a profound way."
