Professor Carens recently published The Ethics of Immigration (Oxford University Press, 2013) which explores the practical problems that immigration poses for Western democracies and challenges the way in which we think about citizenship and belonging, about rights and responsibilities, and about freedom and equality.
The Ethics of Immigration was recently awarded the prestigious 2014 David Easton Award by the American Political Science Association.

Professor Carens’ research focuses on questions about justice, equality, and freedom in democratic communities. He is particularly interested in the normative issues raised by the movement of people across state borders and by ethnic and cultural diversity in all its forms.
