ACU and Orange Sky Laundry have announced a major partnership during a contract signing event in Canberra yesterday. ACU will become Orange Sky’s first ever National Education Partner. This partnership has been formed through our mutual aim to make a positive difference to society through empathy and education.
Orange Sky Laundry is the world’s first free mobile laundry service for the homeless. Founders Nic Marchesi and Lucas Patchett started Orange Sky with one van in the streets of Brisbane and have now expanded across Australia to service over 100 locations in metropolitan and regional areas. The newest van “Tumbles” was launched on the NSW central coast in May.
General Manager of Operations David Tubb is an ACU alumnus who received the Sophia Scholarship in 2015 to help expand Orange Sky interstate.
With more than 850 volunteers from diverse backgrounds, Orange Sky has now also diversified to provide shower vans and digital vehicles. Their mission is to provide these vehicles to facilitate conversation, volunteering and opportunities for their ‘friends’.
Purpose-built vans with two washing machines, two dryers, an onboard generator, water tanks and, most importantly, six orange chairs, do the rounds of well-known, yet discreet locations across Australia’s various other charitable service locations. Volunteers and friends spend time together on the orange chairs – having a chat or playing cards or chess, or tossing a footy about – all while the machines are washing and the driers are spinning.
ACU’s investment in this partnership will promote growth for Orange Sky, building their educational offering and capacity so they can improve their services to the homeless and create development opportunities for volunteers. Through an integrated sponsorship engaging students, staff and research capabilities, Orange Sky Laundry and ACU will develop activities that make real positive change in the Australian community.
All staff are encouraged to watch the short video above about our partnership with Orange Sky and the impact they have on the homeless community within Australia.
