“It was an absolute pleasure to speak to ACU students – they were very friendly, dedicated and clever” - Professional Association Representative attending the 2018 Expo.
The 2018 Professional Associations Expo was held during Market Day on Tuesday 27 February at the North Sydney Campus. Industry was represented by ten peak professional associations who engaged with ACU students across the Faculties of Law & Business, Health Sciences and Education & Arts.
Highlights included a visit from the NSW Nurses and Midwives Association ‘graduate bus’, representation from both of the peak financial professional associations: FINSIA and FPA, and support from the Law Society of NSW. ACU Student Associations were also present, with student leaders from MAKLSS (Law), MSN (Nursing), NORSPA (Paramedicine) and PGA (Postgraduate students) working with industry representatives to facilitate student engagement. This year, the team from ACU Collaborate Plus also joined the event, highlighting the focus ACU has on entrepreneurial skills and innovation.
With over 300 students visiting the expo, ACU students had a chance to network, build relationships and find out the benefits of joining a professional association as a student member. Industry representatives highlighted their student services, including reduced fees, access to professional development events and networking opportunities with employers.
The event ran within Market Day, hosted by the Student Enrichment team and provided a fun atmosphere with carnival games, make your own smoothie bikes and a free BBQ lunch. Health Science students were also able to be ‘kitted up’ on the day with their practicum uniforms for placements.
The Career Development Service is grateful to all staff from the relevant schools at North Sydney Campus, who worked closely with us to ensure the event ran smoothly. We are also grateful to Academics for their support in promoting the event and attending on the day to meet with relevant industry representatives. The associations who attended the event were pleased to make new connections with students and discuss their member organisations. The ACU Career Development Service looks forward to further engaging with these industry bodies over the course of the year ahead.
For further information regarding Professional Associations, staff can refer students to the resources section of ACU Career Hub to review relevant Professional Associations in their discipline area. Staff are also encouraged to direct students to future employer events including The Big Meet and The Sydney Law Careers Fair, both hosted by the AAGE (Australian Association of Graduate Employers) on Wednesday 28th March 2018.
