The Peter Faber Business School has just completed two successful virtual classroom initiatives with the University of San Diego (USD) and the Catholic University of America (CUA).
Our postgraduate students undertaking International Business Environment and Managerial Marketing have now completed cross-cultural management projects working with students at the two American universities.
Both USD in California, and CUA in Washington DC are ACU key partners, so having students work together further develops relationships and is a natural fit.
Beyond the design phase, this involved matching the culturally diverse ACU students with the more homogeneous American students into integrated teams, and monitoring the student team’s progress on the projects.
In International Business Environment the teams researched and analysed different business meeting and negotiation styles between countries. For instance one integrated team researched, compared and contrasted US-China meeting and negotiation styles, whilst another team focused on Australian-Russian meeting and negotiation styles.
In the Marketing Management unit the teams researched and analysed selected marketing case studies. Teams worked on cases as diverse as the Natural History Museum, London, Barbie in the Chinese market, and Apple’s approach to staying innovative!
One byproduct of these virtual classroom initiatives is that ACU and partner university students learn skills in cross-cultural management, including negotiating project tasks, working with others from very different cultural backgrounds, learning to critique each other’s work in culturally sensitive ways, and of course dealing with time difference and distance constraints.
These initiatives also allow lecturers at ACU and at partner universities to further internationalise their course content as well as develop useful teaching and research contacts with each other.
This exercise with the University of San Diego and the Catholic University of America follows on from past successful virtual classroom experiences at both postgraduate and undergraduate level with Binus University, in Indonesia, another ACU partner university.
Looking ahead to 2018, the Business School is keen to continue the development of these exciting programs right across campuses and with other partner universities.
