Shockingly, domestic violence has killed 63 women in Australia this year. Hundreds of ACU staff and students have thrown their support behind the White Ribbon campaign by posting photos to social media with a message of support. See how you can assist with bringing domestic violence to an end by attending a White Ribbon event on your campus.
ACU is holding a series of local campus White Ribbon events to help break the silence around domestic violence.
Australia is grappling with how to tackle domestic violence, which has left at least 63 women dead so far this year. Many others have had their lives severely impacted by physical, sexual, emotional and psychological abuse. The women affected are not just statistics – they are wives, mothers, daughters, grand-daughters, sisters, aunts, nieces, friends and colleagues.
The White Ribbon events support an international campaign to promote awareness of the issue, as well as to raise funds for projects to end the cycles of violence. The White Ribbon campaign is built around men speaking out against violence, and speaking up for the right of women to feel safe. ACU's own Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Craven is a White Ribbon Ambassador. White Ribbon Day aligns with ACU’s Mission and Values which honour the dignity of all individuals, and ACU staff are encouraged to show their support for the campaign this week.
How to show your support
Attend the White Ribbon Day even on your campus. Dates and details are listed below.
In the lead up to White Ribbon Day, hundreds of ACU staff and students at Ballarat (100+) and Melbourne (200+) have taken part of a visual campaign by posting photos of themselves to social media, showing the White Ribbon Flag containing a message of support to promote the reduction of violence in relationships. The photo gallery can be seen on ACU’s Facebook page. You can download a flag template here to print for use in your own photo.
It is important to reach out to anyone who you believe is being affected by domestic violence and let them know that help is available. You can download an information sheet that details the support services that are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
