The Third Annual Barry O’Keefe Memorial Lecture took place in the Peter Cosgrove Centre, Tenison Woods House, on 15 February 2017.
A highlight of the Thomas More Law School’s orientation for commencing first year law students, the lecture addresses a topical legal question of interest to all who are engaged in social justice and the practice of law as a means to promoting the Common Good.
This year’s address, delivered by the Hon. Justice Margaret J. Beazley, was: 'The Principle of Legality and the Protection of Human Rights in Australia’. Among other achievements, Justice Beazley is the President of the New South Wales Court of Appeal and the first woman to hold the office. She was awarded Life Membership of the NSW Bar Association for exceptional service to the profession of law and she is also an Officer of the Order of Australia, a title she received for her service to the judiciary and the law.
The event was hosted by Professor Rocque Reynolds, Dean of the Law School and the Associate Vice Chancellor, Professor Marea Nicholson, gave the introduction. Following Justice Beazley’s address, the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Law and Business, Professor Therese Joiner, presented students with the Executive Dean’s Awards for outstanding academic performance. The event concluded with supper for the many staff, students, parents and friends who attended the event. ACU was honoured to have both Mrs Janette O’Keefe and Andrew O’Keefe in the audience along with other distinguished guests from academia, the judiciary and the Bar.
