Wellbeing boosters: A recent survey asked Australians about their engagement with ten top actions which have been shown to effectively improve mental health and wellbeing. The results are promising. How many of the top ten are you doing?
A recent survey commissioned by Mental Health Australia looked at the actions that Australians are taking that aim to improve their mental health and wellbeing. Australian adults were asked to rate their engagement with the ten actions below. How many of these do you incorporate into your day-to-day life?
Top ten actions to boost wellbeing:
Making an effort to eat healthily
Make time to socialise with family and friends
Get a good night’s sleep
Exercise for at least ten minutes at one time
Keep the consumption of alcohol, cigarettes and other drugs as limited as possible
Plan and prioritise work and personal commitments
Listen to music while working or studying
Consciously ensure time without electronic devices
Participate in a club, society or sporting activity
Seek advice or support when feeling down or stressed
The survey results were better than expected, particularly in relation to making an effort to eat healthily, keeping consumption of alcohol, cigarettes and other drugs as low as possible, making time to socialise with family and friends and regularly getting a good night’s sleep. Read the full results here. The area of greatest concern was the low percentage of respondents (18%) who stated they would reach out for advice and support when feeling down or stressed.
Support is available for ACU staff
A range of research shows that in times of stress and difficulty, reaching out early for support or assistance is the most helpful in ensuring good mental health and a sense of wellbeing. ACU staff should be mindful that the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is available to assist and is contactable 24/7. The EAP offers confidential professional counselling free of charge to staff members and their families through our provider AccessEAP, to discuss work related and/or personal issues. More information on the EAP.
