To support White Ribbon Day, ACU will be holding a series of events on its campuses in the week beginning November 24.
White Ribbon Day coincides with the United Nations Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and occurs each year on 25 November. It is the first campaign led by men that aims to end violence against women in the world.
In Australia, White Ribbon Day is supported by many male ambassadors, including our Vice Chancellor Professor Greg Craven. Through living the White Ribbon Oath: “never to commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women”, ambassadors act as positive role models in their communities. These men have taken up the challenge to help bring about attitudinal and behavioural change in the community.
To provide additional support, ACU implemented the Provision to Support the Victims of Family or Domestic Violence Policy in May this year. The policy outlines the support that is available to staff members who require leave as a result of experiencing domestic violence.
Through awareness-raising campaigns and initiatives with community groups, White Ribbon works to end violence against women. The results from the National Community Attitudes Survey conducted in 2013 by White Ribbon Australia, showed progress had been made in addressing violence perpetrated by men. The results also indicated that youth attitudes to violence against women had improved, and that people now have a greater understanding of the different forms of violence that occur against women.
