Two moot teams from the Thomas More Law School have shined at the Willem C Vis International Moot (Vis Moot) held in Hong Kong and Vienna.
The team of Mardi Grivas and Nicholas Tsekouras with coach Graham Thomas QC, Moot Master; and Harrison Reed with Jarrod Growse with William Rimmer (Lecturer in Property Law and Barrister at the Victorian Bar), competed in Hong Kong and in Vienna respectively.
The Vis Moot is the world’s most prestigious private international law mooting competition and is considered a grand slam event for mooters.

The two teams had 30 practice moots before departure, mainly using competition conditions with volunteer judges from the Victorian Bar, and their coaches, culminating in a full-dress rehearsal in front of a judging panel chaired by Ian Martindale QC. This practise served the team well.
In Hong Kong 139 teams competed from every continent with TMLS competing against Berlin, Chennai, Hanoi and Ankara University teams in their four rounds.

More than 390 teams competed in Vienna. The TMLS team was the last Australian team in the competition after succeeding against the Juridicum (the Law School of Vienna University) team to get into the Round of 64, then defeating City University of Hong Kong to move into the Round of 32; then the National University of Singapore to enter Round 16 and then to defeat University of Sydney to get into the Round of 8.
And so it was that TMLS met Bucharest University in the quarter finals, where the TMLS team’s magical “journey” for 2018 came to an end. The last Australian team left standing. Quarter finalists in ACU’s very first international moot.
All the opposition team were shocked when they learned that it was our TMLS’s very first year. ACU was the talk of the competition.
The clear message is that this is something that is very worthwhile for ACU students to be involved in.
What a fantastic achievement! Congratulations to Mardi Grivas, Jarrod Growse, Nicholas Tsekouras and Harrison Reed with coaches Graham Thomas QC and William Rimmer.
