Maths prizes for ACU students

Two Australian Catholic University (ACU) students were recently awarded the Student Teacher Prize by the Mathematics Association of NSW.

Strathfield education students Courtney Forbes and David Hagiel were presented their awards by NSW Governor Marie Bashir.

The graduating students were nominated by the University for their outstanding performance and positive interest in promoting quality mathematics teaching and learning during their teacher education course.


Seminar looks at responses to national curriculum

ACU’s School of Education will host a seminar exploring the implications of the Australian national curriculum in English, mathematics, science and history for teachers and schools K-12 – this Thursday at the Strathfield Campus.

Leading experts and scholars – including Associate Professor Judith Anderson from the National Mathematics Association and National History Teachers’ Association President Paul Kiem – will lead panel presentations about the content, scope, skills and assessment of each key learning area.

The session will include plenary discussions with senior Catholic Education Office and NSW Department of Education and Training representatives about the implementation and professional learning issues of the national curriculum.

Tom Alegounarias, President of the NSW Board of Studies, will close the seminar.

Date: Thursday, 6 May 2010

Time: 4.30pm for 4.45pm start. The seminar will finish by 7pm.

Search for performers

Australian Catholic University has been asked by the Sisters of St Joseph to present a concert performance in Rome on the 16 October, for the canonisation of Blessed Mary MacKillop, who will become Australia’s first canonised saint.

The University is looking for students and staff who are interested in being part of this special occasion, to work with a specially appointed performance team to present a contemporary interpretation of Mary Mackillop’s story and charism.

Those selected will also support a number of liturgies associated with the canonisation.
