Hearts in Harmony gains momentum

By engaging people through music and fun, the ‘Hearts in Harmony’ community choir in Melbourne are fast gaining popularity.

ACU music lecturer and group leader Susie Davies-Splitter said the choir and community music events provided a great source of expression for everyone.

Third year Bachelor of Education (Primary) student Bree Monks is a participant in the program, and said it had motivated her to pursue new musical avenues.

“We find laughter and magic in new and exciting experiences, and are unafraid to have a go,” she said.

Susie said she hoped to motivate and inspire students and teachers in the wider community to implement similar programs within their school communities.

The Living Memory Project

Through video, photography and archival documents, East Timorese people are able to pass on the stories and pay testimony to the ex-political prisoners and torture survivors from the 1975-1999 Indonesian occupation.

The Living Memory Project was exhibited at Australian Catholic University’s (ACU) Melbourne Campus during June 2011.

The Living Memory Project provides an invaluable addition to the material currently available on the topic of East Timor’s struggle for independence and serves as a research database.

Media lecturer Carmela Baranowska said the exhibition had been exceptionally powerful and moving.

“The bulk of East Timor’s Living Memory Project is made up of videos and in these short films the living speak for the dead, those who were tortured and killed during the Indonesian occupation,” she said.

“This is an important part of East Timor’s history that needs to be told so it can be remembered, and never repeated.”

ACU has provided much needed funds to the project to ensure it continues its work in preserving East Timorese history.

Jo-Anne Reid is Associate Dean, Teacher Education at Charles Sturt University. Currently serving as Vice President of the World Educational Research Association [WERA], she is the immediate past-President of AARE and a former President of the NSW Teacher Education Council and the Australian Teacher Education Association. As a member of the NSWTEC she was a Ministerial Appointment to the inaugural NSW Quality Teaching Council.

A co-editor of the Asia-Pacific Journal of Teacher Education, she is currently working with the Research Institute for Professional Practice, Learning and Education [RIPPLE], on the ARC Discovery project ‘TERRAnova: Renewing Teacher Education for Rural and Regional Australia’.

Jo-Anne has completed ARC projects focused on Literacy and the Environment; the career pathways of Indigenous teachers; the teaching of literacy in the transition to school; and the history of English teaching, teacher education and public schooling from Federation to World War 2.

ZajdaAssociate Professor Joseph Zajda's 8 books on globalisation, policy and education, displayed by Springer, at the CIES, Montreal 1-5 May.

Associate Professor Joseph Zajda from ACU’s Faculty of Education now has nine publications in print. He also has 68 works in 215 publications in three languages, and features in 4,796 academic library holdings around the world.
