A message from Vice President Fr Anthony Casamento csma: This week we celebrate Holy Week, the most solemn week in the Church’s liturgical year. But what makes this week holy?
In the Christian tradition, Holy Week begins on Palm Sunday when Jesus entered the city of Jerusalem and carries through to the Last Supper on Maundy Thursday, the crucifixion on Good Friday, Holy Saturday and ends on Easter Sunday with His resurrection. It is a time for Christians to reflect on the meaning of Jesus’ death, journey to the cross and concludes with an empty tomb in Calvary.
Palm Sunday: Falling on the Sunday before Easter, Palm Sunday is the first day of Holy Week and commemorates Jesus Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem. This day is celebrated around the world with palms because when Jesus was entering Jerusalem, He was greeted with waving palms and a carpet of palms laid on the ground, because of his long journey.
Maundy Thursday: Also known by many other names such as Holy Thursday and Sheer Thursday. Maundy Thursday is a Christian holy day that commemorates events known as the Washing of the Feet, the Last Supper and the institution of the priesthood. Churches celebrate this day with a re-enactment of the Last Supper and the Washing of the Feet.
Good Friday: Christians annually observe the commemoration of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ on the Friday of Holy Week, Good Friday. From the early days of Christianity, Good Friday was observed as a day of sorrow, penance, and fasting. Churches commemorate this day with a re-enactment of the stages of Jesus’ death, known as The Stations of the Cross.
Easter Sunday: Marking the end of Holy Week and Lent, Easter Sunday is one of the most festive events among Christians worldwide, commemorating Jesus Christ’s resurrection. Churches have a celebration during this day. Many say that Easter Sunday is the most important day in the Christian calendar for Christians to attend church.
Ultimately, Holy Week serves as a way for Christians to reflect on their actions, live the pain that Jesus felt in his last days in a sense, and to put His teachings into action by proclaiming His gospel.
