ACU is committed to increasing employment opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, demonstrated through a target of 3.2% Indigenous employment in ACU's Enterprise Agreement. Additionally, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples Employment Plan 2023 - 2026 includes a range of proactive recruitment initiatives aimed at attracting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff and supporting recruitment and selection practices that are culturally appropriate and inclusive.

ACU supports employment opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people by encouraging the use of identified and targeted positions. An identified position is one that requires the position to be filled by an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander person, noting the position has specific responsibilities to support ACU Indigenous higher education agenda. Targeted positions require the position to be filled by an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander person, has no specific responsibilities supporting ACU Indigenous higher education agenda.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Recruitment Guide provides information on identified and targeted positions and implementing recruitment and selection practices that are culturally appropriate and inclusive of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment programs

  1. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Graduate Employment Program

The ACU Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Graduate Recruitment Employment Program is a two-year employment experience in ACU's professional services team for eligible ACU Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander graduates. This program enables us to develop professionals from within our own graduates and alumni and to show leadership in graduate employment across the higher education sector.

  1. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Higher Degree Research and Employment Program

An initiative included in ACU's enterprise agreement, this program supports ACU and the higher education sector to grow a larger cohort of suitably qualified and capable academics.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students enrolling into ACU Research Higher Degree Programs in either a Master or Doctor of Philosophy or Doctor of Ministry will be offered fixed term employment with the University as an academic in their relevant discipline. The appointment will normally be a Level A Academic, but appointment at a higher level may be offered by the University depending on experience and credentials.

Following successful completion of the research higher degree program and subject to satisfactory performance, the staff member will be offered full-time continuing employment as a teaching and research academic.
