About the Session

Being an active bystander means being aware of when someone's behaviour is inappropriate or threatening and choosing to challenge it.

Throughout this session we'll uncover the 'bystander effect' and why we hesitate in intervening when we see a person who may need help, is experiencing violence, or experiencing problematic behaviour.

You'll learn how to assess risk and context in a situation to understand the best and safest way to intervene as well as the importance of 'being someone who does something' and the consequences when we don't intervene.

Learning Outcomes:

  • being aware of your own hesitations in intervening when there is problematic behaviour/violence/someone needing help.
  • understanding different ways of intervening and recognising that intervening does not always need to consist of getting directly involved.
  • feeling more empowered to intervene in situations.
