What is blended learning?

Blended learning is a combination of face-to-face and online modes to achieve an overarching learning goal. Blended learning can be realised through different approaches, including flipped classroom, intensives and multi-campus. ACU Thrive is an example of a blended learning design.

Synchronous and asynchronous activities and communication are the foundation of blended learning.

  • Synchronous activities and communication occur in real-time, whether face-to-face or online.
  • Asynchronous activities and communication allow users flexibility to engage at any time.

Approaches in blended learning

The flipped classroom approach involves students working through preparatory self-paced, online material before the face-to-face sessions. This allows class time to focus on collaboration, active learning and discussion to promote deeper learning. Consolidation activities may follow the face-to-face sessions, including reflection, quizzes and online discussions.
An intensive unit is taught predominantly online, with the addition of one or more face-to-face blocks (intensives). The face-to-face components may be scheduled at any time during the teaching period. The online materials may also be complemented by weekly synchronous webinars.
The multi-campus model typically involves weekly pre-recorded lectures hosted in the Canvas learning management system. Weekly tutorials, workshops and/or practicals are held locally on each campus.
