This program is designed for staff wanting to gain the skills and confidence to recognise and provide initial assistance to others experiencing a mental health issue until the appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves using a practical, evidence-based Action Plan.
In this interactive course, you will learn about identifying the signs and symptoms of common mental health issues (Depression, Anxiety, Psychosis, and Substance use problems), how to provide initial help, know what professional help is available and how to access it, and learn how to handle common mental health crises.
On successful completion of this course and accompanying quiz, you will be a nationally Accredited Mental Health First Aider for 3 years, including if you wish to be identified at ACU as a Mental Health First Aider for other staff.
Note this workshop is completed over 2 days - attendance for the whole of both days is mandatory.
These workshops are available to all staff. They are not mandatory for casual staff.
Casual staff must obtain prior approval from their supervisor or manager to attend the training. For casual Academic staff such approval is required from the National Head of School or nominated supervisor (consistent with point 23. of the Employment of Sessional Academic Staff Policy).
The Faculty or Unit is responsible for paying the casual staff member for the time while they attend any non-mandatory professional development.
