Overview

Effective onboarding begins before a new employee's first day and continues throughout their first weeks of employment.

A positive onboarding experience helps new employees settle into their role, build connections, understand expectations, and become productive more quickly.

While the Appointments Team manages onboarding administration and employee setup activities, Hiring Managers play a key role in creating a successful commencement experience for their new team member.

Before Your Employee Starts

Preparing for your new employee's arrival helps ensure they can begin contributing from day one.

Consider:

  • Confirming their start date and work arrangements
  • Organising workspace and office access
  • Arranging computer equipment and peripherals
  • Requesting access to systems and applications
  • Planning introductory meetings and key activities
  • Advising your team of the new employee's commencement

Many setup requests, including IT access and equipment, can be submitted through Service Central.

First Day

A structured first day helps employees feel welcomed and supported.

Consider:

  • Meeting your new employee and introducing them to the team
  • Confirming work arrangements and expectations
  • Providing a local orientation to the work area
  • Explaining key processes, systems, and ways of working
  • Ensuring they know where to access support and information

If certified copies of required documents (such as work rights documentation) have not been provided, you may certify a copy of the employee's original documents and send it to the Appointments Team.

First Weeks

Onboarding continues beyond the employee's first day.

During the first few weeks, consider:

  • Scheduling regular check-ins
  • Introducing key stakeholders and contacts
  • Explaining team priorities and objectives
  • Supporting completion of mandatory training and induction activities
  • Clarifying role expectations and responsibilities
  • Providing opportunities for questions and feedback

Supporting a Positive Employee Experience

A positive onboarding experience helps employees:

  • Feel welcomed and connected to the team
  • Understand their role and responsibilities
  • Develop confidence in their new environment
  • Build productive working relationships
  • Become effective contributors more quickly

Taking time to plan and support onboarding can improve employee engagement, productivity, and overall employee experience.
