AAUT overview

AAUT are designed to celebrate and reward excellence in university teaching and the awards have become a valued form of recognition for university educators Australia wide. There are 5 award types which have their own discipline categories and nomination categories:

  • Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning (Citations)
  • Awards for Programs that Enhance Learning (Program Awards)
  • Awards for Teaching Excellence (Teaching Awards)
  • Award for Australian University Teacher of the Year
  • Career Achievement Award

Dates for the 2025 Australian Awards for University Teaching are yet to be published by Universities Australia. More information will be published by CEI once a timeline has been determined.

Citations and Awards

Citations are designed to recognise and reward staff who have made an outstanding contribution to student learning. Individuals and teams are encouraged to apply if they have contributed to the quality of student learning over a sustained period.

Discipline categories:

  • Natural & Physical Science, Agriculture, Environmental and Related Studies
  • Engineering, Information Technology, Architecture and Building
  • Health
  • Education
  • Business, Management and Commerce
  • Society and Culture
  • Multi-disciplinary

Nomination categories:

  • Early Career (less than 5 years teaching experience in higher education institutions)
  • Neville Bonner Award or Indigenous Education
  • Sessional staff ;

Program Awards recognise programs and services which are innovative and provide an outstanding contribution to student experiences and learning outcomes. Program Awards are open to team nominations only.

Categories:

  • Student experience that supports diversity and inclusive practices.
  • Collaborative educational partnerships in learning and teaching.
  • Curriculum transformation and innovative pedagogy.
  • Work Integrated Learning (WIL) programs that value and enhance student employability.

Teaching Awards are designed to acknowledge Australia’s most outstanding university teachers who have a commitment to innovation, quality teaching and improving the student experience and learning outcomes whilst demonstrating excellent leadership.

The Teacher of the Year Award is presented to a Teaching Award recipient for advancing student learning, scholarly contribution to learning and teaching and advancing student learning.

Awarded to one or more individuals who have met the following criteria:

  • Made an outstanding contribution to learning and teaching.
  • Recognised for the impact they have had on the higher education sector.
  • Achievements had a major influence and left an enduring legacy.
  • Served in higher education capacity for at least 25 years.

Dr John Mahoney, for making best-practice teaching approaches easy to access and more digestible in health sciences and beyond.

2021

Mrs Machellee Kosiak, for leadership that empowers Indigenous midwifery students by connecting communities and higher education: connecting two worlds. Neville Bonner Award for Indigenous Education.

2020

Dr Michael Noetel, for using robust psychological evidence to inform teaching and learning, academic leadership, and critical skills for the distinctive health professionals of tomorrow

2019

Dr Elisa Yule & Ms Alexandra Logan, for collaborating with mental health consumers to develop transformational occupational therapy curricula that prepares students for contemporary practice in mental health settings.
