Enhancing professional experience placements

The MyProgress team has been awarded the 2024 Vice-Chancellor's Staff Excellence Award for Foundational Excellence for their work to implement the MyProgress Professional Experience Placement Tool.

The MyProgress digital platform was introduced earlier this year and has improved and streamlined assessment of nursing students during their Professional Experience Placement (PEP).

Senior Lecturer (Nursing) Mandy El-Ali worked in collaboration with staff from ACU's Centre for Education and Innovation, Aaron Hawke, Patricia Yamasaki and Anwar BinUmer, to customise and implement the digital tool.

Ms El-Ali said it was incredibly rewarding to be acknowledged for the vision and hard work invested in the MyProgress project.

"This project was definitely a team effort and could not have succeeded without the collective collegiality and common aims of the project team," Ms El-Ali said.

The project aimed to address inefficiencies in PEP documentation and to make it easier for staff to support students during placements in a proactive way.

The MyProgress tool has allowed academic staff to communicate with students and monitor placement activity in real time, all in one place. This has provided a greater opportunity to address any issues during placement, rather than receiving feedback from students after a placement has already finished.

The platform has also facilitated increased communication between ACU staff and the facilitators who are supervising our students during PEP.

Ms El-Ali said another benefit of the tool has been allowing students to see their progress develop in real time on the platform. "The platform is student-led and has empowered students to take more ownership of their professional experience placement journey."

By preparing students to become competent, compassionate professionals, MyProgress supports ACU's pursuit of the common good and service to the broader community. The focus on holistic development reflects ACU's commitment to human dignity and positively impacting society through education.

Ms El-Ali said the project was still evolving and there were opportunities to explore how MyProgress could be adopted for use in other faculties and disciplines at ACU. The tool will also be implemented in midwifery and paramedicine in 2025.
