Applications are now being called for Semester 2/2015 Graduate Certificate in Higher Education (GCHE) staff scholarships, sponsored by the university. The GCHE promotes the scholarship of teaching in higher education through reflective inquiry and evidence-based teaching practice.

Graduates of the GCHE are formally qualified to teach nationally in higher education settings. Participants are able to collect evidence of scholarship of teaching for a portfolio which may assist in meeting probationary requirements and may also benefit applications for promotion and teaching awards.

Scholarships are available to eligible ACU teaching staff upon approval from their supervisors, typically the Head of School and the Executive Dean of the Faculty. The university is committed to the professional development of its staff and as such waives the enrolment fees as part of the scholarship.

The GCHE is open to degree qualified academic and professional staff members who are directly involved in teaching, this includes continuing or fixed-term employment. Ongoing sessional staff members are also eligible with approval from their Head of School.

Professional benefits of the GCHE

- a nationally accredited (AQF) qualification in tertiary teaching;

- integration of your post-graduate studies with your teaching practice;

- experience of an online learning-centred curriculum;

- investigation of a work-integrated project that utilises reflective inquiry as part of the scholarship of teaching;

- development of a professional portfolio for PRP, probation or promotion applications.

The overarching theme of the GCHE is the scholarship of teaching (SoT) which involves scholarly and pragmatic research into practices of teaching, learning and curriculum. UNHE500 Learning and Teaching in Higher Education is the foundation unit of the course. It provides participants with theoretical frameworks they can use to enhance their practice as a tertiary teacher or professional and to understand that the purpose of teaching is facilitating and supporting others’ learning based on informed reflection and inquiry.

Further information about the course and scholarship are available by contacting the Course Coordinator, Dr Tina Bavaro by phone on 02 9739 2969 or via email at GCHE.LTC@acu.edu.au.

You are encouraged to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to further your professional development at ACU.
