Professor Sandra Jones, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Engagement, warmly invites you to a presentation on Music as Refuge with Laura Hassler, Founder and Director of Musicians without Borders.
Since 1999, Musicians without Borders has brought music to some of the world’s most intransigent conflict and post-conflict regions: Kosovo, Rwanda, Uganda, Palestine, Northern Ireland, El Salvador, contributing to processes of reconciliation, community building and healing.
These days, Musicians without Borders also focuses on Western Europe, applying its expertise from war-torn areas to help bring solidarity and hope to people driven from their homes by war, only to meet walls, fences and a climate of fear and exclusion.
In this meaningful talk, Laura Hassler looks at the context of massive movements of refugees in today’s world, in relation to the global issues of war, poverty and the climate crisis.
From the perspective of socially engaged musicians, she explores the role of the arts in shining light on the contradictions of our societies, and the potential of music to help address the loss of home, culture and identity for people on the move.
