A message from the Associate Vice-Chancellor Brisbane Professor Jim Nyland:
“This is a new space. This [event] would not have happened in Australia 10 years ago.”
These are the words of Father Frank Brennan SJ AO, CEO, Catholic Social Services Australia, commending the fifth Annual Australian Catholic University Vice-Chancellor & President/Archbishop of Brisbane Catholic Stakeholder dinner and panel discussion event, held on Tuesday night this week at the Hilton hotel in the CBD with 250 people in attendance – two thirds of the audience being senior professional external stakeholders of the University across all our areas of mission.
Father Frank joined a distinguished panel comprising the Archbishop of Brisbane Mark Coleridge, Australian Catholic University’s Vice Chancellor and President Professor Greg Craven AO and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Engagement) Professor Sandra Jones.
The discussion was skillfully facilitated by Dr Michael Casey, Director, PM Glynn Institute who solicited deeply thoughtful and inspirational perspectives from the panel on the timely topic of Truth and Love in a time of Fear: Australia up close and Personal.
The event was opened by the Chancellor of the University the Hon John Fahey AC, with closing remarks offered by the Pro Chancellor Mr Julien O’Connell AM - with all profits and contributions generated by the event going to the University’s VCP/Archbishop Scholarship fund to support disadvantaged students wishing to attend programs offered at the ACU Leadership Centre in Cathedral Precinct.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Craven AO and CEO of the Brisbane Lions Mr. Greg Swann sign the Memorandum of Understanding, flanked by ACU Queensland’s Physiotherapy students already working with the Brisbane Lions Women’s AFL Football team.
Amongst the attendees at the dinner and panel discussion were representatives from AFL Queensland as earlier in the day the University had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Brisbane Lions Football Club, which builds upon the excellent relationship that exists between the football club and the University in the areas of learning, research and engagement.
ACU’s Physiotherapy and Exercise Science students (pictured above) are already working with the Brisbane Lions and as a result of this Agreement have steered the AFL Brisbane Lions Women’s football team to the Grand Final this weekend against Adelaide.
Go the Lions!
