We know there are great economic and social benefits of higher education for students and the wider community. We also know that the promotion of student retention, completion and success enhances career progression and mobility. That is why we have developed the ACU Student Retention Strategy.
The Student Retention Strategy is underpinned by the University’s Mission and values, with a focus on identifying and implementing whole-of-university approaches to improving student retention and success.
The strategy is centred on three important aspects of the student lifecycle: admissions, learning and teaching, and co-curriculum. It also focuses on promoting student’s safety, health and wellbeing through academic and professional support.
A key initiative of the Student Retention Strategy is the introduction of the ACU Student Mental Health Strategy and Implementation Plan.
The increasing prevalence and complexity of mental health difficulties among university students can significantly impact their capacity to study and socialise and, in turn, affect their academic performance and course progression.
The Mental Health Strategy and Implementation Plan aims to reduce stigma associated with mental health conditions by enhancing mental health literacy among ACU students and staff.
If we can address risk factors, like stress, with effective early identification and appropriate intervention, we can decrease the likelihood of mental health difficulties progressing, so students can achieve their academic, social and professional goals.
Student retention is an ACU-wide priority and we all have a role to play in achieving student retention and success.
Our commitment to student retention depends entirely on a whole-of-university approach. All faculties and organisational units of ACU are responsible for implementing plans aligned with the ACU Student Retention Strategy. Similarly, we must all foster a safe and inclusive environment that actively promotes positive mental health and wellbeing across our entire University community.
You can view the ACU Student Retention Strategy and ACU Mental Health Strategy and Implementation Plan on the ACU website.
Thank you for your support of this important University priority.
