New appointments for Dianoia Institute of Philosophy

Following the appointment of Professor Stephen Finlay as Director, several outstanding new appointments have been made to ACU’s Dianoia Institute of Philosophy.

The institute was established earlier this year and is dedicated to philosophical research.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Craven said the growth of the institute aligned with our commitment to making philosophy one of the strongest areas of research at ACU.

“These outstanding appointments will help us to achieve our goal of establishing a world-leading position for ACU in philosophical research in the analytic tradition,” Professor Craven said.

Recent appointments to the Dianoia Institute of Philosophy include:

  • John Hawthorne (metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of language) joined the institute as Professor in September. John is also a Professor at the University of Southern California. He was previously the Waynflete Professor of Metaphysical Philosophy at Oxford University, and has also taught at UNSW, Arizona State University, Syracuse University, Rutgers University, and Princeton University.
  • Verónica Gómez (metaphysics, philosophy of mind, and philosophy of cognitive science) will join the institute in September 2020 as a Research Fellow. She is currently completing her PhD at Rutgers University.
  • Kyle Blumberg (philosophy of language, philosophy of mind) will join the institute as a Research Fellow in March 2020. Kyle received his PhD from NYU in 2019, and is joining ACU from a research fellowship at the University of Johannesburg in South Africa.
  • Renée Bolinger (political philosophy) will join the institute as a part-time Research Fellow in January 2020. Renée is Assistant Professor in the Department of Politics and the Center for Human Values at Princeton University.
  • Peter Fritz (logic, metaphysics, philosophy of language) will join the institute as Senior Research Fellow in July 2020, coming from the University of Oslo.
  • Simon Goldstein (logic, philosophy of language, epistemology) commences as Senior Research Fellow in October 2019. Simon received his PhD from Rutgers University in 2017 and joins ACU from Lingnan University in Hong Kong.
  • Christina Dietz (philosophy of mind, epistemology) will join the institute as a Research Fellow in March 2020. Christina received her DPhil from Oxford in 2019 and is joining ACU from a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Southern California.
  • Samuel Baron (philosophy of time, philosophy of mathematics, metaphilosophy) will join the institute as a Senior Research Fellow in January 2020, coming from the University of Western Australia.

The new appointments will join the existing team at the Dianoia Institute of Philosophy.
