ACU Copyright updates

Copyright impacts almost everyone on a daily basis, but it significantly impacts the education sector. Attend an online information session to help you understand our newly updated music licence and your legal responsibilities when developing resources for students.

ACU signs an updated music copyright agreement

ACU recently signed an updated sector-wide music copyright agreement negotiated by Universities Australia, with the updated licence extending what the university can do with contemporary music.

The university can use live and recorded music in the following ways:

• at free university events
• for educational purposes
• for the benefit of employees – in staff rooms and staff tea rooms, and at staff-only events such as Christmas parties
• graduations (with music) can be streamed for up to 30 days – and after the event, the university can also continue to store the recording in a password-protected location
• university events (with music) can be live streamed via ACU’s official social media sites (some limits) and websites – and after each event, the recording can continue to be stored in a password-protected location
• sound recordings can be stored (password protected) digitally for use at the university, including for educational purposes.

The Library is once again offering online copyright sessions via MS Teams for new staff or anyone who wants a refresher:

• LEO and copyright for anyone working in LEO.
• Copyright at ACU for any staff who want an overview of how copyright works at ACU.

These sessions: 

• help you develop a basic understanding of copyright in the ACU workplace
• provide an overview of ACU areas impacted by copyright law
• provide an overview of copyright statutory licences and ACU voluntary licences
• tell you where to get help at ACU.
