For some of us it’s been a while since we’ve been on campus and others may be yet to settle themselves in a new work environment. As we start to return it’s important to familiarise yourself with the evacuation instructions and how to access first aid. It’s also important to know how you can support others during an emergency.
Our campus buildings have emergency warning systems that operate automatically and will activate if fire or smoke is detected.
Step 1: When you hear the initial warning signal (Beep…Beep), get ready and wait for further instructions. Bypass step 1 and evacuate if the Whoop…Whoop alarm immediately activates within your building.
Step 2: Remain calm whenever you hear the evacuation signals (Whoop…Whoop) and proceed to the emergency exits and support others to evacuate if floor wardens aren’t present.
Step 3: Follow the instructions that are broadcast via the public address system and proceed calmly to the emergency assembly area. Remain there until the chief warden advises that it is safe to leave.
In some campus buildings, the evacuation signal may be broadcast without a preceding warning signal. In this situation all building occupants should follow the emergency signal and evacuate in an orderly manner.
The evacuation signal will initially be activated on the top floors before progressively moving down the floors to support an orderly evacuation.
Call the closest staff first aiders to access support.
You can find details of first aiders on posters in your office kitchen or common areas and the staff website.
Contact Security on 1300 729 452 for after-hours support and whenever a staff first aid officer is not accessible.
During a life-threatening emergency, call triple zero (000) and contact Security to advise of the call to emergency services.
