Book of the Year showcase

Students in UNCC100 Self and Community: Exploring the Anatomy of Modern Society read the 2019-2020 Book of the Year, This is My Song by Richard Yaxley and created works from their own interpretation of the novel's central themes and ideas.

They were then asked to reflect on the interrelationships between their creative work, the novel and principles of Catholic Social Thought including human dignity, the common good, human rights and flourishing.

The assessments with the highest marks were considered by a panel comprised of literature and visual arts experts, as well as writers and artists, to be included in the Book of the Year selected works showcase.

The various themes found in Catholic Social Thought were portrayed in the students’ work through media such as art, poetry and diary entries.

On viewing the student interpretations of his novel, author Richard Yaxley said, "The student assignments based on This Is My Song are remarkable!

"I love the way that the students were able to adroitly link their creative processes with Catholic philosophies. It’s great to see my novel interpreted in such a wide and affirming number of ways, so thank you … for choosing my work. The life of a writer is, of course, largely one of isolation and inwardness so to see and experience this kind of communal engagement is extremely heart-warming and humbling. I really appreciate it."
