This Friday 26 August is Wear it Purple Day, which is an opportunity to support and affirm LGBTIQ+ young people by raising awareness about the challenges they face.
This year’s theme is ‘Still me, Still Human’, which aims to support LGBTIQ+ young people by calling on our community to create a positive social culture that puts aside divisive labels and practises greater empathy when talking about human lives.
Staff and students are invited to attend the following Wear it Purple Day events and stalls:
Brisbane Campus Library: a morning tea with purple-themed treats on Thursday 25 August from 10.30am–12pm in the library foyer, with a LGBTIQ+ themed book display, some Wear it Purple freebies and information for staff and students about the day.
The library will be accepting donations, which will be returned to the not-for-profit Wear it Purple to help them support LGBTIQ+ young people.
Melbourne Campus Library: a book display of LGBTIQ+ titles running the whole week, commencing 22 August, in addition to another display celebrating the coinciding Children’s Book Week (which will also include children’s books that reflect diverse content), as well as merchandise and information about Wear it Purple Day.
Melbourne LGBTIQ+ Society event: a gathering will be held on Friday 26 August from 9am–10.30am on the ground floor of the Mary Glowrey Building co-hosted by the Melbourne LGBTIQ+ Society and Student Life Melbourne.
Strathfield Campus: a ‘Purple BBQ’ on Thursday 25 August from 11.30am–1.30pm hosted by the Mount St Mary’s Student Association, including lunch, lollies and an information stall.
There will also be an LGBTIQ+ themed book display in the library during the week. Gold coin donations will be greatly appreciated.
North Sydney Campus Library: an LGBTIQ+ themed book stall.
The ACU Ally Network was launched in 2021 as a reflection of ACU’s commitment to providing a safe, inclusive and respectful place of work, learning and support for staff and students who identify as LGBTIQ+.
