In line with Cyber Awareness Month, here's why you should update your devices whenever a new version is available. Updates aren’t just for new features.
Cybercriminals, malicious programs, and computer viruses are always looking for ways into your devices or application (app). One of the most common ways they do this is through exploiting weakness in software, also known as vulnerabilities. Much like a thief attempting to break into a home, cybercriminals will always look for the easiest way in.
When your software is not up to date, it’s like leaving a window unlocked.
Regular updates are critical in maintaining a secure system. It's important to check for any updates and make sure that automatic updates are switched on. Updates have security upgrades to fix these weaknesses. You can turn on automatic updates so that this happens without your input.
ACU also provide an automatic update feature with our managed devices. ACU devices will update automatically. Alternatively, you can open 'Software Centre' on your PC or laptop and look under 'updates' for any new updates.
The easiest way to stay on top of your updates is by turning on or confirming automatic updates where possible. An automatic update is a ‘set and forget’ feature that updates your software as soon as it becomes available, allowing you to relax with the knowledge that you’re always using the most secure version.
To turn on automatic updates, review the instructions relevant to your device:
A backup is a digital copy of important information and a precautionary measure so that your data is accessible in case something happens to your computer. Our devices store all of our important data and if compromised, damaged, lost or stolen, your data may be lost. Recovering data can be expensive, time consuming or impossible.
It is recommended to back up your files regularly to either a cloud storage facility such as OneDrive or a physical external storage device like a hard drive.
OneDrive is a Microsoft product that provides cloud storage for your files. ACU recommends storing all data in OneDrive.
What is OneDrive and why do I want it?
