Key Academic Integrity Policy Update

ACU’s Student Academic Integrity and Misconduct Policy was recently updated to recognise unauthorised use of artificial intelligence as a separate form of academic misconduct.

This includes the use of generative (content production) artificial intelligence, paraphrasing and translation tools, unless their use is authorised in the assessment requirements and properly acknowledged.

Turnitin will shortly release an AI detection writing capability tool that will appear as an AI indication button in the Originality report (this will not be visible to students). The new tool should be used with caution, and staff should remain alert to the possibility of false positives. Upon its release, the Centre for Education and Innovation (CEI) will test its capabilities and provide further information about the ACU approach to the new Turnitin detection feature.

For more information, refer to the LEO Guide on how to review the originality report.

Do you have a particular interest in Artificial Intelligence tools?

ACU has established a Community of Practice to encourage discussion around emerging practice, including acceptable use, ethical implications and approaches to assessment. If you are interested in becoming involved, please join the Academic Integrity Community of Practice Teams site.

We have also established focus groups within this community of practice:

  • Designing for AI in assessment and learning
    • Developing and collecting exemplars of learning and assessment tasks that help students work ethically and productively with artificial intelligence
  • Learn AI: Empowering Staff and Students with AI Tools and Techniques
    • A collaborative site to build a useful and useable repository of AI tools to support the many aspects of teaching and learning that drive effective and engaging curricula
  • AI for Equity and Inclusion in HE
    • Exploring and promoting the use of artificial intelligence to address disparities and promote inclusion of underrepresented groups in higher education

If you are interested in participating, please access the CoP and navigate to the focus area channels. Please contact CEI@acu.edu.au if you have any questions.
