ACU’s Mary MacKillop Institute for Health Research has opened a new Musculoskeletal Research Centre in Brisbane.

The Centre will concentrate on several key areas including: exercise and management of low back pain, osteoarthritis, orthopedics; women’s health and sports injury prevention and management.  The Centre collaborates with elite sportsmen from top football teams including the Roar, Broncos and the Reds, as well as elite AFL teams based in Melbourne.

MacKillop Director, Professor Simon Stewart, said the call of St Mary MacKillop to “never see a need without doing something about it” is the driving force behind the Centre.

“The Mary MacKillop Institute for Health Research is not a medical research institute in the traditional sense; our strength is in people and in communities.  We hope to strengthen ACU’s vision to undertake world-class research that reaches people wherever there is a need,” Professor Stewart said.

Professor Stewart said the new Centre will act as a research hub and is already bringing benefit to the local community.

“We’re focusing on low back pain, women’s health issues and ongoing research into musculoskeletal and neurological health, especially concussion.  We’re extremely fortunate to have Professor Julie Hides leading the clinic.  She is a leader in her field, especially in relation to low back pain research.”

The Centre and research hub is located next to the Mater Hospital precinct and is associated with the Mater-ACU Back Stability Research Clinic, Mater Health Services and the Mater Medical Research Institute.

The Centre will be officially launched in July.
