A message from the Associate Vice-Chancellor Melbourne Dr John Ballard: Monday 17 October was our small spring graduation ceremony, the major graduations occurring in Autumn. Thirteen doctoral candidates along with two hundred graduands and their families gathered at the Melbourne Convention Centre to partake in the ceremony. The excitement in the hall was palpable.
Our occasional speaker, the entrepreneurial Brendan Watson, OAM, Principal and Chief Executive of Catholic Regional College Sydenham and Catholic Regional Institute of Training, addressed the graduands, relating some encouraging personal experiences that have contributed to his leadership success and to the benefit of the communities that he serves.
The afternoon concluded with celebrations and many photographs.
Another gathering, albeit of a very different nature, occurred on Campus just over a week ago. After two years of hard work by many, ACU hosted the Brunswick Street Market in the St. Mary of the Cross Square. This market will take place on the second Saturday of every month. It has started on a small scale but is expected to significantly increase with the improvement of the weather. The focus is on the eclectic community of Fitzroy and Collingwood with antique designer fashion, hand crafted works and a sausage sizzle provided by rotating charitable groups.
Our objective in hosting the market is to bring people to the ACU-end of Brunswick Street and enliven the Campus on the weekend. This is showing promising early signs with a person paying $3000 to purchase a sausage (with bread) to support fundraising for Muscular Dystrophy.
In the run towards the end of semester, exams and the prospect of seemingly endless marking, we can lose sight of the lighter moments of university life. Moments that lift the spirits when we notice them slip by, or better still, participate in them.
I wish to extend my thanks and appreciation to the Melbourne and Ballarat teams for their continued commitment to both the earnest and lighter side of ACU and our students’ experience.
Dr John Ballard
