Shaping shared solutions: A workshop in clinical ethics mediation

“Healthcare practitioners sometimes wonder whether what they recommend really is what should be done, what is the best that can be done, for their patient in hospital. Families sometimes wonder whether they can adequately and clearly present the interests and values of the patient. They are concerned whether their beliefs and values, their wishes and priorities, about the person who is not only a member of their family but also a patient in a hospital, will influence decisions. Indeed, disagreements and even conflicts can arise over which decision, by whom, based on what facts and what understanding of those facts, will be best for the patient.”
– Associate Professor Bernadette Tobin, Director, Plunkett Centre for Ethics
