The Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity has appointed ACU faculty member Dr David Kirchhoffer to represent the Catholic Church on a theological commission.

Dr Kirchhoffer is one of only four representatives officially appointed by the Vatican to represent the Catholic Church and its teaching at the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches.

The Faith and Order Commission includes representatives of churches belonging to the main historical streams of Christianity and is focused on studying doctrinal, sacramental and moral questions which divide Christian communions.

Dr Kirchhoffer is a lecturer in ACU’s Faculty of Theology and Philosophy and a member of the Institute for Religion and Critical Inquiry.

His teaching and research focuses primarily on theological ethics.

Earlier this year Dr Kirchhoffer presented a paper on Religious Freedom in Catholic Teaching to the Faith and Order Commission’s sub-group on Moral Discernment.

He is scheduled to attend the next plenary meeting of the commission in South Africa in June 2017.
