R U OK? Day is a national day of action led by the R U OK? Foundation that is dedicated to reminding people to regularly check in with family, friends and colleagues. The R U OK? Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation set up to prevent suicide by encouraging all people to regularly and meaningfully ask, "Are you OK?"
It can often be hard to know how someone is feeling, and while "Are you OK?" is a simple question, it can be a tough one to ask. But having this conversation is an important step in helping that family member, friend or colleague to open up. This simple question can go a long way to help those we care about feel safe to talk to us about their experiences when they are going through tough times.
You don’t need to be an expert to reach out, just a good friend and a willing listener. Simply listening and not judging can make a difference.
Remember that all of us have what it takes to change a life.
On R U OK? Day, and every day, if you are worried about someone, read the how to have a conversation resource before you ask. If they are OK, that person will know you’re someone who cares enough to ask.
If some conversations are just too big for family or friends, and if you’re worried about someone and would like some professional support, ACU offers all staff and their immediate family members access to professional and confidential counselling support through the Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
R U OK? Day aims to give people a bit more confidence to be there for each other when things are tough. It’s three little words we can all ask, not just on this day, but every day.
In support of R U OK? Day, staff can register their interest in attending an online Mental Health Essentials workshop delivered by the Workplace Mental Health Institute. This workshop provides an overview in understanding mental health issues as well as the skills needed to identify and respond safely and compassionately to anyone experiencing a mental health situation.
