Introducing the Assignment Extension Tool

From Semester 1 2025, ACU is introducing the Assignment Extension Tool in Canvas, which streamlines how students request extensions. The tool allows students to apply for an automatic 72-hour extension directly through Canvas, without lecturer in charge (LIC) approval or supporting documents.

What does this mean for LICs?

• The tool is automatically enabled in all Canvas units, requiring no action from staff.
• Extension requests up to 72 hours are automatically processed, eliminating manual approvals.
• Due dates update instantly in Canvas.
• Extensions longer than 72 hours or requests for quizzes and group assignments will require students to apply for Special Consideration.

Engaging with the tool

• Watch the Assignment Extension Tool training video.
• Check the tool is enabled in Canvas (contact Learning.Technologies@acu.edu.au if not).
• Ensure the ‘General Assessment Information’ page is in the unit’s Information & Resources module.
• Discuss the new process with students in Week 1.

Teach an ACU Online unit?

LICs teaching ACU Online units and their students will continue using the existing ACU Online extension request process for short-term and long-term extensions through the Assignment Extension Tool.

Student support

Students will continue to be informed of the change via Canvas announcements and a direct communication in Week 1 and throughout semester, supported by relevant AskACU resources.
