Low sensory retreats across our campuses

In honour of Neurodiversity Celebration Week (17 - 23 March), the Access and Disability Service is proud to announce the launch of low sensory retreats across our campuses (Blacktown still in development). These retreats aim to create a supportive environment for our community, providing a private space for individuals to decompress from the sensory overload that often accompanies busy academic life.

Recognising the diverse needs of our ACU community, each retreat space has been thoughtfully curated with comfortable bean bags, recliners, and a selection of sensory items, such as fidget toys and weighted blankets. It is important to note that these rooms are intended solely for relaxation and are not designed for study or work purposes.

Here’s where you can find the low sensory retreats on each campus:

  • Ballarat: 113.G.02
  • Brisbane: 204.2.05
  • Canberra: 302.G.03
  • Melbourne: 420.2.74
  • North Sydney: 501.2.23.D
  • Strathfield: 600.G.08
  • Blacktown: in development

We encourage all staff members to promote the use of these retreats, particularly for those students and colleagues who may experience sensory sensitivities. By providing this resource, we can support our community in managing stress and recharging between classes and other responsibilities.

We warmly invite staff to the official launch of these rooms (on your respective campus) to check out the space and grab a light refreshment on Wednesday 19 March (times vary depending on campus - contact Bree Seamer if you would like to attend).

As we celebrate Neurodiversity Celebration Week, let us collectively embrace the diverse ways in which individuals experience the world. Together, we can foster a more inclusive and understanding environment at ACU.
