On 3 August we celebrate the feast day of Saint Dominic, the patron saint of our Canberra Campus.
Saint Dominic was the founder of the Order of Preachers, commonly known as the Dominicans and a true beacon of light for the Church. He was known as a man of profound spirituality, intellectual vigour, and unwavering commitment to preaching and teaching the Gospel.
Even though he was born more then 800 years ago, we can learn from him a few lessons, which are relevant for us today.
Firstly, Saint Dominic exemplified a life of deep prayer and contemplation amidst the busyness of the world. In today's fast-paced and often chaotic society, his commitment to regular prayer and contemplative reflection serves as a reminder of the importance of nurturing a spiritual life that grounds and sustains us. Regardless of our faith, religion or tradition we are all invited to stop, to pray and to meditate. This will allow us to discern the purpose of our lives, our vocation and mission.
Secondly, Saint Dominic's emphasis on education and intellectual pursuit is highly relevant in our modern age, where knowledge and understanding are valued. He believed in the transformative power of knowledge, not only for personal growth but also for the benefit of others. This aspect of his life is so important for our ACU community. In a crazy world facing complex challenges, Saint Dominic encourages us to seek wisdom and truth earnestly.
Finally, Saint Dominic's compassion and dedication to serving others, especially the marginalized and those in need, are timeless virtues. His ministry was marked by a profound empathy and a desire to listen to those who are in any kind of need. In a society divided by various issues, Saint Dominic's example calls us to reach out in solidarity and compassion towards all people. This is why he received this noble title – the Light of the Church.
So, when we celebrate his feast day on 3 August, he challenges us to embrace the truth with courage, to engage with others in love and humility, and to seek holiness through prayer and service.
Saint Dominic – the Light of the Church – pray for us.
